William Houghtby

William “Bill” Earl Houghtby, 99, of North Oaks, Minnesota, passed away after a short illness on Feb 11, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Bill had been a member of Connecticut’s Middletown Power Squadron/1 since 1969. He had 37 merit marks and was a life member of United States Power Squadrons, America’s Boating Club.

He was very active throughout his long life. His quick mind, keen observations and dry wit remained alarmingly sharp.

Bill was born and grew up in Blissfield, Missouri, where he met his lifelong sweetheart and wife of 68 years, Elizabeth. He served in the Navy in WWII, had a long career as an aeronautical engineer and inventor, and helped develop the technology of hydrogen fuel cells.

Bill and Elizabeth lived in Connecticut for years and loved the seashore and ocean, sailing, gardening and spending time with family. Bill was devoted to Elizabeth during her long struggle with MS.

Preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; siblings Florence Blankenship, Harlan and Gary Houghtby; and son-in-law Mike Weaver. Survived by daughters Anne Weaver and Carol Houghtby Watson, sons David (Pearl Kilbride) and Bruce (Diane); granddaughter Emily Watson; grandsons Phillip (Maria and great-grandkids Charlotte and Luke) and Ethan (Paige) Houghtby; and sister-in-law Jean Houghtby. Also, many dear nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
